Sinking Ships Vol 1

peter_of_perth_hills Along with a similarly brilliant Vol 2, Greg Dear has created an EP of gorgeous guitar-based mood music songs. I love the gently upbeat "Paint You, but the darkly melodramatic "Condemned" and the wistful "Rest" are excellent also. Favorite track: Paint You.

Condemned 03:15
I am taken to the place where the echoes are cold, Where the light doesn’t come from the sun. I am taken to the place where redemption is withheld Tie me down to the gurney I am done. (x 2) Shaken, not stirred – my heart is unheard My blisters are all on display Like some artwork that warrants your admiration But which fails to teach what I say It fails to teach what I say My life is your pony – that your daddy wanted you to ride My suffering only serves to provide I’m just an artwork that calls to your intellect But which does not display what I hide. It cannot display what I hide.
2.
Paint You 03:45
I want to paint you there With that light in your hair Dark and light side by side And no fear inside I want to paint you there With that light in your hair Soft and brittle side by side Flames dance inside I want to paint you there With that light in your hair Strong and weak side by side Listen to the colours inside
3.
Rest 03:29
Together we can leave. We can spread the word. We can hold the word. Together, or in sin. Falling apart. Falling apart. For I have not seen such a simple scene, a noble fret, or a hidden regret, some place you forget. I have a vessel and a vision. I have seen your derision. I know that something is true when it comes out in front and it moves all the tears. I know where it runs to, and when it will slide into all of your fears and all of your pride. Some whispers are cracked, no bond will return No glue will return. No stitching will come. No rebirth will occur. No rise to the stars. No redemption, no cure. No redemption, no cure. I need rest.

about

This EP is the first instalment in an ongoing recording project (Sinking Ships) that I am producing with a variety of collaborators from the Perth music scene. The project is an avenue for a number of my songs that don't lend themselves to the vibe and format of my main band, Beautiful Losers (see beautifullosers.bandcamp.com for the band's albums and activities). This first instalment has instrumentalists (my ship mates) that I invited to fit this specific set of songs. Some future instalments will be similar (invited instrumentalists to create a band for the recording session), while other instalments will involve existing Perth bands who I think suit the song (in other words, my song would suit that band better than my own band would). At some future point, I might collate some of these instalments for a vinyl or CD release: for now though, they only exist as downloads. Enjoy.
